What this solves — and what it doesn't
Search-and-rescue response time varies wildly — from under an hour with a helicopter on a clear day to 24+ hours for a remote overdue report in winter. This tool gives a planning estimate based on distance from trailhead, terrain, conditions, and how the call was made. A PLB (personal locator beacon) cuts time enormously because it gives the team a GPS fix immediately.
How to read the result
The result is hours from ‘incident reported’ to ‘team at last-known point’. It does not include the search time after that — search time depends on how visible the party is and how big the search box is.
Always assume ‘no PLB’ is the planning default; you can’t rely on cell signal in the backcountry.
Limitations
- Doesn’t include aerial asset availability (helicopters help a lot).
- Winter conditions can multiply these numbers.
- Doesn’t model the probability of a successful search.

Should I get a PLB?
If you go alone or off-trail, yes. Inexpensive two-way satellite messengers exist. PLBs are the single biggest reduction in SAR response time.
What if I am stuck and dark is coming?
Stop moving. Stay where you are. Searchers plan to the last-known point; moving makes the search box bigger.
Does trip plan registration help?
Yes — leave a plan with someone reliable. It’s the difference between "overdue report" and "they’re fine, just late."
