What this solves — and what it doesn't
A trail’s difficulty is not just its distance, nor just its elevation profile — it is the combination of both, modified by surface, weather, and the people walking it. Most online ratings collapse to a star scale that hides this. Our composite score starts with a base of 8 × distance + 0.6 × total elevation change + 0.02 × maximum altitude (altitude penalty for very high trails where oxygen and weather matter), then multiplies by surface, roughness, weather, and group-fitness modifiers. The result is normalized to a 0 to 100 scale that maps to a five-band verbal label.
This is most useful when you are choosing between two candidate routes that look similar on paper but feel different on the ground — say, an 11 km ridge walk at 2,800 m with talus versus a 14 km forested traverse with the same total elevation.
How to read the result
The 0 to 100 score is mapped into five bands:
- 0 to 24 Easy — flat or gentle, suitable for families and first-time backpackers.
- 25 to 44 Moderate — meaningful climbs, but no exposure; day-hiker boots suffice.
- 45 to 64 Hard — full-day effort, may include rough ground or altitude.
- 65 to 81 Very Hard — long day or overnight, scrambling possible, conditions matter.
- 82 to 100 Extreme — alpine terrain, weather exposure, or objective hazards; only with experience.
The number is a starting point for conversation, not a verdict. Always read trip reports and check current conditions.
Limitations
- Subjective modifiers. Roughness and group fitness are sliders — moving them 2 → 5 changes the score substantially.
- Altitude penalty is linear. A real altitude curve shows degradation accelerating above 3,500 m, but we keep it linear for transparency.
- No exposure rating. We do not include Class 3 scrambling or fall exposure because those are not just difficulty — they are hazard. Read a route description.
- No wildlife hazard. Bear density, snake altitude, etc. are not in the model.
Frequently asked questions
Why include altitude separately from total gain?
Total gain tells you how hard the climbs are; maximum altitude tells you how thin the air gets and how changeable the weather becomes. A 1,500 m gain that tops out at 1,800 m (forest) is a very different day from a 1,500 m gain that tops out at 3,800 m (alpine tundra, possible thunderstorms).
Can I use this on a multi-day trip?
Yes — score each day separately. A Moderate day × 5 is a different trip from a single Hard day, even if the total energy matches. Daily breakdowns help you plan rest days.
What is Naismith rule and why is this different?
Naismith (1892) gave us: 5 km/h on flat plus 1 hour per 600 m of ascent. It ignores descents, surface, weather, and people. Our score is built from Naismith’s intuition but extends it.
